カリフォルニア州，バークレー/ロサンゼルス。カリフォルニア州の最大の平和グループが，本日のアフガニスタンの空爆に反対の意を表した。攻撃が続く中、組織のメンバーたちは，アメリカの軍人，及び長期に渡り苦しめられているアフガニスタンの人々の安全を祈った。また，ブッシュ政権に対し空爆の停止と地上戦の断念を要求した。

　「結論的には，アメリカ人は安全と正義の両方を求めている。この攻撃は，私たち国民の安全を損なうことになるだろうし，同時に正義の国際的システムを弱めている。」とダニエル・バビノー（南カリフォルニアのピースアクションの幹部）は述べた。

「9月11日のテロ攻撃の目的は，アメリカ軍が反応することでイスラム世界の分裂をさせることであった。事件を起こした者は，‘忠実な’信者と‘裏切り者’との間に亀裂を起こし，そしてそうすることで自らの目的の為に新しい入隊者を採用し，穏健なイスラムの政権を不安定化させることを望んでいる。

　継続されているアメリカ軍の攻撃は，テロリストたちに望んでいるものを与え，事態のより一層の悪化を招くかもしれない。アメリカ軍の行動は，核武装国家であるパキスタンでの内戦をも引起こす可能性が非常に高い。」

とピーター・フェレンバック（カリフォルニアピースアクションの幹部）は語った。

　9月11日の攻撃は，世界的には非人道的な犯罪と考えられている。アメリカは，そのような犯罪に巻き込まれた初めての国ではない。かつてのユーゴスラヴィアやルワンダでは，非人道的な恐ろしい犯罪にあった犠牲者たちは，法廷において公平に扱われて当然であり、また実際に公平な扱いを受けている。

　ブッシュ政権は，その証拠が，十分強力であると主張している。すなわち、アメリカの軍人たちの生命を危険にさらし，数百万人もの無実のアフガニスタン人を餓死に追いやる状況を作り出す軍事行動を行うことが出来るというのである。

「もしその証拠が，多くの人々を危険にさらすのに十分なほど具体的だと主張するのなら，なぜ容疑者たちを公開の法廷で起訴するほど十分強力ではないと言えるのだろう？」とアンドリュー･ページ（北カリフォルニアのピースアクションの幹部）は言う。

以前のユーゴスラヴィアやルワンダでも行ったように，国連安全保障理事会は，容疑者たちを審理するための国際裁判所を設置すべきである。そうすればアメリカは，そのような審理機関あるいは国際犯罪法廷に対し，その証拠を提出するだろう。

Berkeley/Los Angeles, CA - California’s largest peace group declared its opposition today to air strikes against Afghanistan. As the violence continued, members of the organization prayed both for the safety of American men and women in uniform and for the long-suffering people of Afghanistan and called upon the Bush Administration to stop the air strikes and refrain from launching a ground war.

“Ultimately, Americans seek both security and justice. These attacks will make our nation less safe while weakening international systems of justice,” said Danielle Babineau, Peace Action’s Southern California Political Director.

California Peace Action warned that the attacks could lead to a wider war.

“The goal of the attacks of September 11th was to provoke a US military reaction that could polarize the Islamic world. The perpetrators seek to create a divide between the ‘faithful’ and the ‘traitors,’ and in so doing recruit to their cause and destabilize moderate Islamic governments. Continued US military attacks may give the terrorists what they want, and worse. US military action carries with it the very real possibility of launching a civil war in Pakistan, a nuclear armed nation,” said Peter Ferenbach, Executive Director of California Peace Action.

The attacks on September 11th were internationally recognized as a crime against humanity. The US is not the first nation against whom such a crime has been committed. In the former Yugoslavia and in Rwanda, the victims of horrendous crimes against humanity deserve - and are getting - justice through the courts of law.

The Bush administration argues that its evidence is strong enough to conduct military operations that risk the lives of U.S. soldiers and endanger millions of starving, innocent Afghans.

“If the evidence is concrete enough to jeopardize so many lives, how could it not be strong enough to indict suspects openly in a court of law?” asked Andrew Page, Peace Action Northern California Political Director.

As it did with regard to the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda, the United Nations Security Council should establish an international tribunal to try the suspects. The United States would then submit its evidence to such a competent body or to the International Criminal Court.
