Xanana said that the future was upon the youth, honoured all the fallen fighters and thanked the international solidarity movement. Horta said that the Timorese had to build up their own country and not focus too much on the leaders. When they did this announcement the chaos was complete and the emtions ran very high. People are afraid that the CNRT will fall apart and that they will return to the situation of 1974, when a civil war was fought between rival political fractions at East Timor. Some hours later, also after more declarations from Gusmao and Horta (where they received big applause), people realised that is was after all not that bad. Gusmao and Horta will continue their work for the people of East Timor, but they had to release some pressure at them. Both Horta and Gusmao were along the congress pleeing for a multi-parti system at East Timor, as a guarantee for a genuine democratic East Timor in the future. This step is maybe supposed as motivation for people to build their own political parties, to organise themselves. The last what I heard was that Ramos Horta declared to the Portugese press that he quit because he wanted to make way for Xanana as vice-president, under another president. This will mean that Xanana will still be in the CNRT. But a lot of rumours are going around. Endie, Member of the Free East Timor Foundation, is at Dili present. She follows all the developments.
