The Economic Times Online=20 July 8, 2000 Sony to sack 928 staff at Indonesian factory JAKARTA=20 ELECTRONICS giant Sony plans to lay off 928 staff who stopped work more than two months ago in a dispute over new working conditions, a company official said today.=20 Sony Indonesia=92s finance department manager Satoshi Kanenori said 928 of its 1,500 employees at its television and stereo production plant in Jakarta would be sacked since the dispute had proven impossible to resolve. He said the staff, who have been on strike since April 26, will be fired as soon as possible.=20 Kanenori said the strikers walked out demanding that they be able to sit while they work. However, the company=92s newly introduce production line requires its staff to stand.=20 He said the company had received approval from the Indonesian government to terminate the workers=92 contracts, a requirement under new labour laws. If the sacked workers do not accept Sony=92s decision they have the right to appeal to an administrative court.=20 Kanenori said he expects the decision to cost Sony, which owns the plant, more than $500,000 in termination pay and other costs.=20 The dispute comes amid a surge of worker unrest in Indonesia, which has been on the increase since the country was plunged into its worst economic crisis. =97 AP=20 FAIR USE NOTICE.
