JOB OPENING FOR PROGRAM ASSISTANT AT INTERNATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL ORGANIZATION IN OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA Deadline for Applications: April 1, 2001 Start Date: late April or early May, 2001 Position Overview: The Program Assistant is primarily responsible for providing research and writing assistance, and logistical support in the area of international finance and trade policy that impacts the environment. Pacific Environment is a non-profit organization that works to protect the environment in the Pacific Rim region by educating the public, building the capacity of citizen groups and reforming policies. The international finance program works to prevent export credit agencies and other finance institutions from supporting environmentally destructive projects in Pacific Rim countries. The trade program protects forests in Pacific Rim countries from irresponsible forestry and trade policies. The Program Assistant will report to the Policy Director (located in DC) and work closely with the Timber Trade Campaigner. The Program Assistant will be based in Pacific Environment's main office in Oakland, California, but will travel to Washington DC at least two times a year and may attend an ECA conference. Responsibilities: =B7 Providing web, library and other investigative research assistance, including tracking and gathering information on industrial projects and trade and finance policies.=20 =B7 Performing basic office tasks including managing email accounts, answering information requests, organizing files and distributing information to staff and outside parties.=20 =B7 Assisting with the production and dissemination of project and campaign outreach materials, including policy papers, press releases, citizens' guides, fact sheets and case studies.=20 =B7 Providing logistical coordination of outside events such as local meetings, inter-organizational strategy sessions and regional workshops.=20 =B7 Managing program information on Pacific Environment websites and email listserves.=20 =B7 Other tasks as needed. Skills and Experience Needed: =B7 Strong written and verbal communications skills.=20 =B7 Research skills and an aptitude for investigative research into agencies and policies.=20 =B7 Computer skills (Internet and word processing).=20 =B7 Ability to juggle a variety of tasks simultaneously and work under pressure both as a part of a team and independently.=20 =B7 Personal commitment to environmental and social justice.=20 =B7 Sense of humor is essential! This position is ideally suited for someone with a BA or BS in environmental studies, international affairs or political science that has 1-3 years of experience working in a not for profit. Knowledge of a foreign language (Russian or Japanese language skills) is helpful but not required. This position is full time and provides a competitive salary ($28,000 to $30,000 depending upon experience) plus medical, dental and vacation= benefits.
