The company said that although it was aware of 10 reports of TVs overheating, it did not see the need for a recall. However, after product defects prompted recalls at several other Japanese manufacturers, the Ministry of International Trade and Industry asked Mitsubishi to investigate the problems. In recent months, Bridgestone/Firestone recalled 6.5m tyres after they were linked with at least 88 deaths and hundreds of injuries. Mitsubishi Motors recalled 620,000 vehicles after it admitted it had hidden customer complaints for more than three decades and Snow Brand, the leading dairy products manufacturer, had to shut down factories after more than 14,000 people took ill after drinking its milk. Mitsubishi Electric has recalled 18,000 units of the CZ-1 series TVs and 27,000 units from the CZ-2 series made and sold in Japan between 1987 and 1990. Although the company estimates only a fraction of the sets are still in use, it declined to disclose how much the recall would cost. Shares in Mitsubishi were down 1.1 per cent or Y11 (10 cents) at Y957 near the close of trading on Tuesday in Tokyo . FAIR USE NOTICE.
