1982年の一審において、ムミアが銃を手にしているところを見た、と唯一証言したの は、シンシア・ホワイトという女性の証人です。しかし、事件の前後に彼女を見た、 という人のすべてが、彼女は現場から離れた場所にいて、犯行を見ているはずはない と証言しています。
ムミア弁護団は、彼女を発見し、話を聞く手はずを整えた、とも言われていますが、 まだその点についてははっきりしないようです。

今回、新たに登場した証人は、パメラ・ジェンキンズです。彼女は80年代の始め頃、 まだティーンエイジャーでしたが、売春婦として働いていた当時、シンシア・ホワイ ト（彼女も当時、売春をしていた）をよく知っていました。同時に、ジェンキンズさ んの当時のボーイフレンドは、フィラデルフィア警察の警官で、彼女は警察への情報 提供者でもあったようです。
ジェンキンズさんは、宣誓供述書を提出して、当時のボーイフレンドであった警官の Thomas Ryan(トーマス・リャンと発音するのでしょうか？)氏が、彼女に、ムミアを 警官射殺の犯人だと嘘の証言をするように頼んだ、と述べています。実際は、彼女は 現場には居もしなかったのです。さらに、ホワイトさんに偽の証言をさせるために彼 女を捜し出し、警察がホワイトさんに圧力をかけることに協力した謝礼として150ド ルを受け取った、とも証言しました。

一審でムミアに不利な証言をし、それが実は警察による脅迫によってやむなくされた 偽証であったことを、昨年６月に法廷で証言したヴェロニカ・ジョーンズさんに続い て、ジェンキンズさんも、真実を語る勇気を示しました。彼女は、最近、他の事件で も検察側の証人として、警察による不正事件を告発する重要な証言をしています。 （ちなみに、フィラデルフィア警察は、全米でももっとも不正や腐敗の多い警察とし て米国内でも悪名が高いようです。）
こっちの事件については直接関係はないので、翻訳は省略しましたが、末尾の英文に は、この事件についても、ある程度のことが書かれています。やはり殺人事件での偽 証です。

シンシア・ホワイトは、ムミアに対するフレームアップの証言を行った後、警察によ る手厚い保護のもとに売春をつづけており、彼女の現在の居所も警察にしか分かって いないようです。
売春で逮捕されても、すぐに釈放されていましたが、1987年に、重罪の強盗で逮捕さ れたときには、そうもいかなかったようで、判事は保釈を認めようとしなかったので すが、そのときもフィラデルフィア警察の殺人課のダグラス・カルブレス刑事が法廷 に現れ、ホワイトは重要事件での公益証人であるから、という理由をつけて、釈放を 要求、彼女はそのまま姿を消し、自分の裁判にも出廷しなかったので、逮捕状が出て います。しかし、フィラデルフィア警察は、ホワイトを逮捕する気はまったくないよ うで、コンピュータの捜査リストにも登録されていないので、他州で見つかっても、 身元が割れて、逮捕される危険はないと思われます。

付け加えると、警察の要求をあっさりのんでホワイトを釈放した判事は、現在州最高 裁でムミアの再審を審理している判事の一人である、Russell M. Nigroです。

以上が、だいたいの状況です。
弁護団はジェンキンズさんの証言を採用するように、最高裁に働きかけるとともに、 ホワイトさんという、決定的な証人への事情聴取ができるかもしれない、という緊迫 した状況になっています。
一方、以前にレポートしたように、ムミアに対する刑務所の締め付けや、ラジオ放送 への検閲などの圧力も強化されています。

The Missing Link is Found

Cynthia White was the key witness in the government's fraudulent trial of Mumia Abu-Jamal in 1982. White was the only witness who testified to seeing Mumia with a gun in his hand. No other witnesses saw that. It is also interesting that the other witnesses who saw Cynthia White that evening, all place her at a distance from the incident in a place where she could not have seen what happened. Mumia's lawyers would very much like to talk to Cynthia White today. They would like to ask her what really happened. But, like so much of the government's case against Mumia, she has simply disappeared.

Pamela Jenkins Comes Forward Now we know a lot more about Cynthia White and why she testified falsely against Mumia. A new witness, Pamela Jenkins, has come forward to provide the missing link in the chain of evidence against the police. Pamela Jenkins was working as a teenage prostitute in the early 80s and knew Cynthia White well. Pamela also knew a lot of Philly cops well. In fact, one of them, Officer Thomas Ryan, was her boy friend at the time. Jenkins has now given a sworn statement that Ryan asked her to testify against Mumia and to falsely identify Mumia as the shooter, in spite of the fact that she wasn't even at the scene. She also states that Officer Ryan paid her $150 to help find White, and that the police put pressure on White to lie at Mumia's trial. Should we believe Pamela Jenkins after all these years? Well the government has recently used her as a star witness in the police corruption cases in Philadelphia. For example, she revealed how Philly cops used her to provide fraudulent evidence to obtain the murder conviction of Raymond Carter. She testified that Officer Thomas Ryan paid her $500 to testify against Carter. As the result of her testimony, Officer Ryan went to jail, and Raymond Carter is a free man today - one of at least 137 persons released so far in Philadelphia's continuing police frame-up scandal. Pamela Jenkins has joined the courageous Veronica Jones, in coming forward to tell the truth about the frame-up of Mumia Abu-Jamal. Does the government now want to claim that their own key witness in the 39th Precinct scandal has suddenly become unbelievable because she has now spilled the beans on the Mumia case?

And Where is Cynthia White Today?
It seems that only the police know where Cynthia White is, and they aren't saying. After testifying for the prosecution in Mumia's frame-up, Cynthia White continued to work the streets under police protection. Following Mumia's conviction, she was arrested numerous times for prostitution, only to have the charges dismissed, or an easy plea bargain worked out. She had a real "Get Out of Jail Free" card! Then in 1987 she got into serious trouble and was arrested for robbery. A judge was about to hold her without bail, when Philadelphia homicide detective Douglas Culbreth suddenly appeared in the courtroom with an unusual request. He asked the judge to release Cynthia White on her own signature because "she was a Commonwealth witness in a very high profile case." So the judge let her go, and she has not been seen since. She did not appear for her court date on the robbery charge, so there is a warrant outstanding. But the Philly police have no interest in finding her. They have never listed her on the NCIC, the federal government's computer list of wanted criminals. If she gets picked up in another state, her name will not appear and she will not be in danger. Oh yes, one other thing. The judge who simply let Cynthia White go at the request of her police protectors was Russell M. Nigro.
