Tankers to refuel Gulf-bound B-52s
By Jan Wesner Childs Stripes Okinawa Bureau
KADENA AIR BASE - Sixteen KC-135 refuelers took off from Kadena AirBase
on
Sunday to meet six B-52s headed toward the Indian Ocean island of Diego
Garcia and possible bombing missions over Iraq.
KC−135空中給油機16機がインド洋上のDiego Garcia基地を経由してイラク
の空爆に向かう予定のB−52爆撃機6機と落ち合うため、嘉手納空軍基地を日曜日
に飛び立った。

"A tanker's job is to get strike aircraft rapidly deployed forward,"
Brockshus said as the tanker crews prepared to take off.
空中給油機の役割は、攻撃機が迅速に前方展開できるように支援することだ。

Brockshus said each KC-135 was carrying a full load of 80,000 pounds of fuel.
He said each B-52 would take 200,000 pounds of fuel.
The bombers left Barksdale Air Force Base, La., at 6:38 p.m. Saturday,
Japan time, and were headed to Diego Garcia.
"We'll be doing their third refueling as they come by Okinawa,"
Brockshus
said.
The KC-135s are among a handful of Pacific troops participating
in the Gulf
buildup. Nearly 4,000 Marines and sailors from Okinawa and Sasebo Naval
Base
in southern Japan left Okinawa's White Beach Naval Port on Wednesday
for the
Persian Gulf.
Six F-15 fighters from Kadena deployed there Nov. 1 as part of
Operation
Northern Watch, before the buildup started.
