Sasebo civilian suspected in hit-and-run incident

The accident is the third suspected hit-and-run incident involving
Department of Defense employees in Japan in 30 days. Both previous
incidents
occurred on Okinawa.
ここ１カ月で米軍関係者の起こした日本でのひき逃げ事件の３件目。前の二件は沖
縄で起こった。
In this instance, a dark-colored car that witnesses said carried
a 'Y'
license plate knocked 71-year-old Keiko Taniguchi from her scooter
at 10:15
p.m. Sunday in Shinoki Town, an area of Sasebo west of the Navy base.
The
victim was treated for bruises and cuts on her hip and was released
from a
nearby hospital, according to a statement from the Ainoura Police
Department.

The plates imprinted with a 'Y' marking identify American vehicle-owners
covered by the U.S.-Japan Status of Forces Agreement.
「Ｙ」ナンバーは地位協定に規定された米軍関係者の車。
After the driver fled, Sasebo police contacted base security officials,
who
searched U.S. installations here for the car. They found the suspect's
car
Monday night and notified the Japanese police, said base spokeswoman
Susan
Balding.
運転手は逃げてしまったので、佐世保警察は米軍基地に通報し、容疑者の車は月曜
夜に発見された。
An Ainoura police spokesman, who would not give his name, said
Wednesday
morning that the suspect has cooperated. So far, police say, the American
has not been detained or arrested as investigators transfer the case
to
prosecutors, who will weigh hit-and-run charges. The 33-year-old suspect
works on base, and his wife is in the Navy.
送検されたが身柄は拘束されていない。容疑者は３３歳で基地に勤務、配偶者は海
軍にいる。

After the second incident in Okinawa Friday, the top Marine commander
on
the island called a press conference to apologize for what he called
irresponsible conduct.
沖縄で二件目の事件が起きた後、海兵隊のトップは記者会見を開いてこの「無責任
な行動」に対して謝罪した。
