Walker and Vicki Semler October 29, 1999 MORE NGO AND UN PREPARATIONS FOR BEIJING PLUS FIVE NGOs USE DIFFERENT APPROACHES TO ASSESS PROGRESS IN IMPLEMENTING THE BEIJING PLATFORM FOR ACTION (PFA): In addition to alternative country reports (see GlobalNet #130), NGOs are engaged in various sectoral monitoring and assessment activities. The following are selected examples: he NGO Working Groups on The Girl Child/NGO Committee on UNICEF is preparing a follow-up global assessment to its 1998 report describing progress made by governments in implementing recommendations on The Girl Child in the PFA (Section L). Information in this report will be based on reports from working groups in 90 countries. In January 2000, the working groups are planning a 2-day on-line dialogue with young girls on their perceptions of progress made on implementing the PFA in collaboration with UNICEF's Voices of Youth. Currently underway are women in power and decision-making and women and education. Beginning 8 November to 17 December 1999, the last three working groups will discuss women and media, the girl-child and women's human rights. For the women and media dialogue, to be facilitated by WomenAction 2000, you can go to the following web-site and sign up: <http://www.sdnp.undp.org/wwatch/subscr.pl> AGENDA ANNOUNCED FOR MARCH 2000 MEETINGS OF THE UN COMMISSION ON THE STATUS OF WOMEN (CSW)/PREPARATORY COMMITTEE (PREPCOM) FOR THE BEIJING PLUS FIVE SPECIAL SESSION: The CSW and PrepCom for the General Assembly Special Session on Beijing Plus Five will meet from 28 February to 17 March 2000. Four days will be allocated to the 44th Session of the CSW (28 February to 2 March), and 11 days to the PrepCom (3-17 March). There will be a holiday on Thursday 16 March for the observance of Idh al Adha. In order to make up for this time, the PrepCom may be extended through Saturday 18 March. The CSW will consider: follow-up to the Fourth World Conference on Women (FWCW); comprehensive review and appraisal of the implementation of the Platform for Action (PFA); follow-up to ECOSOC resolutions and decisions; and communications concerning the status of women. Two panel presentations are planned, one on 1 March (during the CSW) on "Emerging Issues, Trends and New Approaches to Issues Affecting the Situation of Women or Equality Between Men and Women" and the second on Monday 6 March (during the PrepCom) on "Outlook on Gender Equality, Development and Peace Beyond the year 2000". CONGO FACILITATING NGOs PARTICIPATION IN MARCH 2000 MEETINGS CONGO, and the CONGO Committees on the Status of Women in New York, Geneva and Vienna in consultation with a number of other collaborating NGOs, are laying the groundwork for substantive input by NGOs into the March CSW/PrepCom discussions. In addition to the full-day NGO Consultation on Sunday, February 27, 2000, CONGO will be holding daily briefings and will coordinate space allocation for the convening of NGO regional caucuses and other relevant meetings and workshops. Looking ahead to the June 2000 2-day NGO Working Session prior to the UN Special Session, CONGO will convene a meeting of the full committee -"NGOs for Women 2000"- to discuss specifics of these sessions, as well as to the possible compilation of a Global Alternative Report based on regional and national alternative reports.
