Dear All,

We are very happy to announce that the Cabinet of HMG/Nepal on 31st January
2001 has decided to ratify CEDAW and had already proceeded for the deposit
of intention to the United Nations Secretariate. This is a great achievement
for Nepali women especially when there is a reluctancy to amend and change
discriminatory situation. Now we are going to start lobbying to the
Parliament Member to ratify it by the Parliament as well, so that we can
use it as a National Law, which will be binding to the government.

We really worked hard last year preparing various advocacy leaflets from
grassroots to the Policy makers and also translated Optional Protocol text
in Nepali language. We lobbied to the Ministry of Women, Children and
Social Welfare, Law Ministry, Foerign Ministry, Human Rights Commission and
Cabinet Secretariate. UNICEF Nepal's support for the project was very helpful.

IWRAW - Asia Pacific had also helped us by providing various materials to
prepare the Advocacy Leaflets and all other information.

Our participation during the negotiation process (through the help of IWRAW
- Asia Pacific) during finalizing the Optional Protocol by working
committee helped us to initiate the process and disemminate information.
Consultation workshop for Regional and International Strategic meeting held
on June 2000 (organized by IWRAW - Asia Pacific) was also very helpful.

The initiation of Ministry of Women, Law and Justice and Foreign Ministry
including Cabinet Secretariate and Human Rights Commission was very strong
and positive.

We would also like to thank Optional Protocol Network Committee Members
Hon'ble Indira Rana, Dr. Shanta Thapaliya, Ms. Sharmila K.C., Mr. Hemang
Sharma, Mr. Rabindra Bhattarai, Dr. Chandra Bhadra, Mr. Tanka Panta, Mr.
Ram Kumar Kamat, Ms. Bandana Rana, Ms. Promoda Shah and Mr. Jogendra
Ghimire for their valuable support and joint lobbying.

Finally we would like to Congratulate and thanks all of you, who has helped
us directly and indirectly in this process and request for the further help
to ratify it also by the Parliament.

With Very Best Regards
