---------------- Original message follows ---------------- From: Gabrielle Engh <enghgl@igc.org> Date: Tue, 06 Feb 2001 15:12:35 -0500 Subject: Fwd: [karat2000] GENDER IN VOLUNTARY WORK IN YOUTH ORGANISATIONS -- GENDER IN VOLUNTARY WORK IN YOUTH ORGANISATIONS To: Member Organisations Date: 7 December 2000 >From: Tobias Flessenkemper, Secretary General European Youth Foru= m Dominique Grisard, Political Secretary CSAJ Re: GENDER IN VOLUNTARY WORK IN YOUTH ORGANISATIONS CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS Solothurn (Switzerland) 17-22 April 2001 The International Year of Volunteers in 2001 is a great opportunity for gender-specific youth voluntary work to be given the recognition and appreciation it deserves. For the Women s Commission of the National Youth Council of Switzerland (CSAJ) and the European Youth Forum it is reason enough to organise a seminar on =ab Gender in Voluntary work =bb for young women with leadership experience in youth organisations. The seminar will concentrate on three main themes: 1. Recognition of gender specific voluntary work in youth organisations In this thematic block, we will discuss different approaches to making voluntary women s and girls work visible. As a member of the International Year for Volunteers Forum in Switzerland, CSAJ is involved in the development of a standardised national voluntary work form. This form is one of many ways to increase recognition towards voluntary work. Do current approaches take the specific situation of gender-specific voluntary work into account? From the standardised national voluntary work forms to the institutionalisation of a voluntary social year, we will discuss different strategies that could lead to the acknowledgement of the importance of gender-specific voluntary work in youth organisations. The seminar will give an overview of the situation in different countries. 2. Encouraging young women to enter decision-making positions in youth organisations A second block will be dealing with different projects and concepts that encourage young women to take on responsibility in voluntary work. Similar to the situation in paid work young women are still underrepresented in higher-ranking positions in voluntary work. Questions, such as how youth associations can be sensitised to the absence of young women in leadership positions in youth associations, will be discussed. 3. Development of working methods This round of workshops teaches the participants, how to professionally assess and portray the experience and knowledge acquired by volunteering. Trainers working with specific approaches such as the Port-folio Method will introduce the participants to the professional jargon of identifying and successfully presenting their competencies. Such professional treatment of voluntary work is to lead to a recognition of volunteering. Aims of the seminar =b7 to celebrate young women s effort in voluntary work in Europe =b7 to analyse voluntary work from a gender-specific angle =b7 to encourage an exchange between young women in youth organisations with women experienced in voluntary work =b7 to develop strategies, how girls and young women can be motivate= d to take on higher-ranking and prestigious positions in voluntary work =b7 to demonstrate that youth organisations are sensitised to issue= s of gender equality in voluntary work. =b7 to identify concrete stategies to tackle the different issues of= the seminar =b7 to link the results of the seminar to other up-coming European and International activities related to volunteering Profile of participants =b7 Young women with leadership experience in youth organisations =b7 Young women who have a multiplier role in their organisation =b7 Under 35 years of age =b7 Be able to speak and work in either English, French or German.
