Subject: new mailinglist on "male involvement" in reproductive rights

Dear colleagues,
Please help us disseminate this information:

Choice and power - reproductive rights for women and men

Invitation to join Q Web's discussion list

Q Web, a global network based in Sweden, for promoting women's health and
gender equality, is pleased to invite you to a discussion list on men's role
in relation to sexuality and reproduction. We want to discuss the concept
"male involvement" - widely used, but also questioned on the international
arena, mainly in relation to women's reproductive health.

Our focus is on sexual and reproductive rights - for women and for men. We
want to bring up the controversies in terms of gender imbalance, loss of
power, freedom of choice and competition for resources. To allow a wide
audience to take part in this discussion we display an interactive list,
CHOICE and POWER, on Q Web's web site (www.qweb.kvinnoforum.se).

The list is open for discussion and exchange until the end of November.
Contributions from the list will be brought into a Q Web seminar in
Stockholm on November 27 to 28, 2000. Topics at the seminar include
presentation of IRRRAG's five-country study on reproductive rights and male
involvement, men's reproductive rights and responsibilities, and how men can
gain from women's empowerment. Proceedings from the seminar and a resume of
the discussions on the list, will subsequently be documented on Q Web's web
site.

We invite you to join the list CHOICE and POWER and take part in the
exchange on the concept, the dilemmas and the strategies. We find the
following themes particularly challenging and would like to hear your views
on them:

1. Reproductive rights in context.
        - experiences, case studies and reflections on the cultural,
political, religious, economic, and social conditions for equal reproductive
rights.

2. Men's reproductive rights and responsibilities
        - definitions and controversies

3. Equal reproductive rights - gains and losses for women and men
        - consequences for the individual, the couple and the society

4. Competition or shared concern.
        - negotiating sexual and reproductive rights

We would also appreciate your comments on the following questions:
- What is the meaning of men's reproductive rights for you?
- What do you see as obstacles for equal reproductive rights for women
and men?
- How to achieve gender equality in the sphere of sexuality and
reproduction?

How to join the list?

A mailing list is a group of people who receive electronic mail as a group.
Anyone who is a member of the mailing list can submit information to be
distributed to the entire group. Joining the list is called subscribing and
can easily be done via the Internet or via e-mail, see below. The "Choice
and Power" mailing list is open for everyone who wants to join but only
subscribers can post messages to the list.

Q Web moderate the list as a service to the list members to ensure that
advertisements, private e-mails and other irrelevant e-mails are not posted
on the list and that the discussion is kept within the subject of this list.
This means that the moderator will approve all incoming mails before posting
them on the list. The list moderators for "Choice and Power" is Kajsa
Sundstrom and Bengt Estborn. If you encounter any problems when subscribing
or posting messages to the list, please don't hesitate to contact Bengt
Estborn at benes@kvinnoforum.se or Nina Strandberg at ninst@kvinnoforum.se
