Using a common email address participants in the list serve will be able to post messages about women's housing issues that will be received by all other "subscribers" to the list. To our knowledge this is the first international list serve devoted to women's housing rights and your participation will undoubtedly contribute to its success. EVICTIONWOMEN will focus on women's experiences of "forced eviction". COHRE estimates that over 14 million people worldwide are currently facing forced eviction. Forced eviction, for the purposes of this list serve, is the involuntary removal of individuals, families and communities from their homes and/or lands. Forced evictions occur in developing and developed countries around the world and have been recognized as a "gross violation of human rights, particularly the right to adequate housing" by the United Nations Commission on Human Rights (Resolution 1993/77). Forced evictions occur for a number of reasons: armed conflict, large scale development projects, city beautification schemes, international events and economic disadvantage. EVICTIONWOMEN is intended to promote international dialogue on women's experiences before, during and after forced eviction. The list will provide an opportunity for people around the world to exchange information, experiences and strategies to address those experiences. It is anticipated that the list will also include discussions on other housing issues as they affect women. The list will run for 6 consecutive weeks and will commence on 16 October 2000 (ending 1 December 2000). Specific issues or perspectives will be highlighted each week or for two week sessions. We are hoping that a diverse range of individuals and organizations will subscribe to this list to allow for rich discussions. We encourage you to PARTICIPATE: to contribute to the documentation of women's experiences of forced eviction; to learn more about women's housing rights in other countries; to advance the field of economic, social and cultural rights and women's human rights HOW TO PARTICIPATE? To participate you must SUBSCRIBE to the list as follows: 1. You must send an email message to: listserv@listserv.utoronto.ca 2. Leave the subject line of your email message BLANK 3. In the body of the email write: subscribe evictionwomen-l 4. You will soon receive an email from the server which says that your subscription application has been received. You will then be asked to reply to the email to confirm your participation (instructions are provided in the body of that email). YOU MUST REPLY TO THE EMAIL YOU RECEIVE. IF YOU DO NOT REPLY WITHIN 96 HOURS TO CONFIRM YOU WILL NOT BE INCLUDED ON THE LIST AND YOU WILL HAVE TO BEGIN THE SUBSCRIPTION PROCESS AGAIN. 5. Once you confirm, you should then receive TWO emails from the server. One will confirm your subscription and will say "You have been added to the EVICTIONWOMEN-L list". The other will be a longer letter which starts with "Your subscription to the EVICTIONWOMEN-L list ... has been accepted". The letter will go on to describe the list serve and will provide you with technical information you will need for the duration of list serve.
