Sincerely yours, Ruth Kao Chairperson of the 4th EAWF of Taiwan The 4th East Asian Women's Forum September 4 - 7 , 2000 Taipei, Taiwan The 4th East Asian Women's Forum September 4 - 7 , 2000 Taipei, Taiwan To : The 4th East Asian Women's Forum No. 3, Lane 269, Roosevelt Road, Sec.3 Taipei 106, TAIWAN 106 台北市羅斯福路三段269巷3號 ABOUT THE STEERING COMMITTEE : * Over the past fifteen years Taiwan has witnessed a great mobilization of women in all areas of society. Despite a long history of political, cultural, religious and socioeconomic constraints the role of women in the home and society has changed considerably. * The number of NGO bodies related to women's issue which now exist in Taiwan of itself is am ample evidence of this change. * Since the First East Asian Women's Forum in 1994 women from Taiwan have actively participated and contributed to each gathering. The experience of meeting and sharing with other women from the region was invaluable. * Our participation did not end with the Forum meetings. After the 1995 EAWF for example, the twelve actions were adopted and became valuable directives for our own NGO's to pursue. * Now we enter a new era with its many challenges. Poverty takes on a different meaning as we grabble with matters such as gender equality and the advancement of women in high-tech society and global village. * The opportunity to host the Forth EAWF in Taiwan is a joy to us and we look forward to leaning and sharing with one another. May each of us gain new insights and discover what are the prospects and hopes in this New Center for New Women to pursue and fulfill. * Up to today, 35 groups participate in the steering committee. Executive Committee as follows: 1. Awakening Kaohsiung 2. End Child Prostitution in Asian Tourism Taiwan National Committee 3. Good Shepherd Center 4. Grassroots Women Worker's Center 5. Kaohsiung Christian Counseling Center 6. National Organization for Women 7. Pen Wan-ru Foundation 8. Taipei Association for the Promotion of Women's Right 9. The Department of Women's Development in Democratic Progressive Party 10.The Garden of Hope Foundation 11.The Homemakers' Union and Foundation 12.The Single Parent Educational Foundation 13.The Taipei Women's Association For Community Development 14.Women's Ass. of Taiwan 15.Women Ministry Committee of the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan INVITATION AND WELCOME Dear Friends and Colleagues It is both a privilege and a pleasure to announce that the 4th East Asian Women(s Forum will be held in Taiwan 4-7 September 2000 at the Chien Ta Overseas Activity Center, Taipei. For the past several months the organizers in your host country, Taiwan, continued to work enthusiastically and energetically despite the devastation caused by the September 1999 earthquakes. Such turn of events made it an even greater challenge to prepare for the Forum, and I sincerely thank all members of the Steering Committee for their loyalty and commitment. At the end of an era dominated by materialism and so-called progress we cannot but fail to see the decline in human values and negative effects on many of our societies. How easy it is to be discouraged and apathetic in a broken world. However, the dawning of a New Century brings with it new opportunities and new beginnings !! The fact that women care about the situation in the respective countries of East Asia, and desire to convene a fourth time is of itself a sign of hope. Our theme for this Forum New Century - New Women we believe, will serve to encourage each participant and enable us to think positively and act creatively. Please note our provision for a Youth Forum. My personal hope is that each country will encourage an even greater participation of youth delegates. In addition, differently abled delegates are asked to alert the Steering Committee how we can better prepare for your individual practical needs. With joy, anticipation and renewed hope we await your arrival. We look forward to your full and active participation in this important event. On behalf of the 4th East Asia Women's Forum Steering Committee accept our warm invitation and welcome to Taiwan in the year 2000. Sincerely Yours Ruth Kao Chairperson Chien Tan Overseas Youth Activity Center The Center, which sits on 6.5 hectares of land, is located at the western edge of Chien Tan Mountain by the Keelung River. The entire campus equals a total architectural area of 20,142 square meters (this corresponds to 6,103 pings). The Center is divided into three main areas : The Conference Area, the Education Area, and the Leisure and Residence Area. While located near Taipei City, a major metropolitan area and transportation hub, one can still find peace from the loud bustle of the city and keep the dust and machines at a distance. The Center's facilities include : a green lawn, a tea house, and a laundry center, and provides for, conference, speeches, training sessions, academic symposiums, casual gatherings, group lodging and dinning.
