JCBL Assistance Initiative for Mine Free Asia

Over one hundred and thirty countries have joined the Ottawa Convention since its entry into force in March 1999. However, only a limited number of countries in Asia, including Japan, Cambodia, Thailand and the Philippines, have been the state parties to the convention so far. This is due to the fact that Asia is one of the most heavily mined and mine-affected regions
in the world, with several countries engaging in conflicts with non-state actors.

Realizing that to further universalize the convention and to contribute to solving mine problems on the ground level, it is vital for local NGOs, individuals and national campaigns to be involved at a greater degree, Japan Campaign to Ban Landmines (JCBL) decided to establish a small scale assistance scheme for Mine Free Asia to support projects in Asian region in order to achieve Mine Free Asia.

Objectives:
To support small-scale projects that contribute to universalizing the convention and/or supporting mine action program in general. The projects must be organized and undertaken by Asian campaigns/NGOs.

Budget:
Up to US$ 5,000 per project

Applicable Projects:

JCBL will support projects which
Fit the needs of beneficiaries of a project and projected area.

Encourage dialogue between civil society and governments on banning landmines.
Promote universalization of the Ottawa Convention.
Expand activity of Asian campaigns to banning landmines.

Developing tools and materials for mine risk education.
Holding meetings with NSAs and/or governments.
Conducting research/survey on mine victims and/or mine fields.
Producing materials/documents to raising public awareness on the issue.
Participating in mine-related meetings of great importance for national campaigns/NGOs.

Targeted Countries:

              All countries in Asia.
